It was Justified.

March 31, 2010

“I’m giving you 24 hours to get out of town or else I will shoot you on sight.” – Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens

Only three episodes into its first season, and already this show has gotten exceedingly high ratings and has stolen my heart.

Oh? The show?

It’s called Justified and its on FX. The show revolves around Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (pictured above) and his return to his home state of Kentucky after a…mishap…in Miami. (Basically, he shot a guy straight up in public and the higher ups didn’t appreciate it.)

Of course, Givens isn’t excited to go home. When he gets there, he has to deal with a misfitted bunch of characters. They include his new boss, Art Mullen, and two other deputies, Tim Gutterson and Rachel Brooks. Given’s past also comes to light in the form of his ex-wife, Winona; her new husband, Gary and Given’s high school crush Ava, who is the only witness to Givens’ shooting of his old buddy Boyd Crowder.

Crazy, right?

Oh, and there’s also a bunch of crime stuff as well. The second episode focuses around a prison escapee who escapes to find the money he stashed from a bank robbery 15 years ago. Givens has to find him and then works security detail, transporting criminals across state.

Bottom line, the show is great fun. It’s dramatic, subtley comedic and action packed. The Givens character is based on books and short stories written by Elmore Leonard. Givens is a modern cowboy, always wearing boots and a cowboy hat, along with hip holster that he uses only with the intention of killing. He’s a hero to all and I am so excited to have found this new series.

So watch it! Every Tuesday at 10 p.m. on FX.

I Can Dig It!

March 28, 2010

Whooo…its Sunday night and you know what that means! Another round of “What Should I Watch This Week?” Or as I like to call it, “I Can Dig It!”  So, let’s dig in.

1. In Plain Sight  Wednesdays 10 p.m. on USA Network

The season premiere of this show starts this Wednesday, and I advise everyone to turn in!

I admit, while I did watch the entire first season, I lost interest in the second. But I did see the finale and O-M-G, I can’t wait to see this new premiere.

For all those who don’t know, In Plain Sight focuses on U.S. Marshals who get and try to keep people in the Witness Protection Program.

Of course, there’s the guy-girl dynamic – in this case being between two Marshals, and partners, Mary Shannon and Marshall Mann. Marshall loves Mary, but Mary is a little rough around the edges and has a complicated relationship with Raphael Ramirez, a baseball player.

*SPOILER ALERT*

In last season’s finale, Mary got shot and in (yet another classic TV cliffhanger) somewhat critical will-she-or-won’t-she survive condition. Since the show pretty much revolves around her, I’m going to guess that she lives. But! I haven’t seen the episode yet so check in on Wednesday to find out!

Season 3 trailer:

2. Bones  Thursdays at 8 p.m. on FOX

FINALLY! IT’S BACK!

Even though I haven’t mentioned it previously, I have good reason. This fantastic show has been on hiatus since February 4. (For those keeping track, the new episode will air on April 1. Yes. It’s a long time.)

This Thursday marks the show’s return and next week’s episode (which I WILL be mentioning again) is the (SPOILER) 100th which has gotten HUGE speculation. (When I say huge, I mean HUGE. As in, too big to even link to every single article written about it huge.)

The thing that makes this show SO great is (once again) the guy/girl dynamic. However, this one is stronger and more loveable than just about any guy/girl dynamic on television right now. The two stars (David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel, right) are both sizzling hot and have amazing chemistry together.

The show revolves around Dr. Temperance Brennan (Deschanel), a forensic anthropoligist in Washington D.C. Boreanaz plays FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth, who partners with Brennan – whom he lovingly calls “Bones” – to solve murders. In my opinion, this non-maybe-someday-couple could be added to the list of “Greatest Fictional TV Lovers” along with Ross and Rachel from Friends, Mulder and Scully from The X-Files, and even Lucy and Ricky Ricardo.

I added in this week’s promo below, but to put in perspective how much people love Booth and Bones together? I searched “Booth and Bones” on Youtube, and I got 4,430 results. Gotta love it.

3. CSI  Thursdays at 9 p.m. (THIS WEEK AT 10 p.m.) on CBS

This isn’t a new show, nor does it really have a compelling boy-girl will they-won’t they storyline. But, its the original CSI. It’s a classic – or will be whenever it finally gets off the air. (For the record, it’s currently in its 10th season.)

Followers of the show – including me and my dad – know that Gil Grissom (played by William Petersen, in picture above) left and got replaced by Dr. Ray Langston. This week’s episode has Ray and Nick (Stokes) working a case involving a popular fetish. Meanwhile, Catherine (Willows, seen in picture above) and Detective Vartann “grow closer” during a 24-hour stakeout in a hotel.

There are 8 more episodes this season, and shall play out from now on week after week. Should be exciting!

Lost Generation

March 27, 2010

I was talking to my sister, Kelly (right) and her best friend Melissa (left) today, and they shocked me. I was talking about different TV shows I used to/sometimes still watch and they looked back at me with blank faces.

Sure, they’re 16-years-old so blank faces are common. But honestly, I was shocked! How could they not have heard of some of these great hit shows that used to fill me with such joy, heartbreak, laughs and tears?!

I started singing some of the theme songs, hoping that would jog their memories, and NOTHING! They had no idea what I was talking about and even – gasp – laughed at me!  Well…I couldn’t take this lying down so I MADE them listen to the theme songs. Here are the top 5 theme songs of shows they’ve never seen.

What a sad moment when we realize how much our childhoods differ from those younger than us. *Sigh*

5. The Facts of Life

4. Growing Pains

3. Dawson’s Creek

2. Laverne and Shirley

1. The Nanny

OMG! The Jack is Back!

March 23, 2010

OMG! Last night’s Gossip Girl episode brought back my all-time favorite seconday (on-and-off because most people hate him) character in the show’s history!

Jack Bass!

If you watch the show, you know that (teenager and star character) Chuck Bass is technically now an orphan. His mother (supposedly) died giving childbirth. (This storyline has come up this season, and I won’t touch upon it because it is complicated and still being worked out.) Chuck’s father, Bart, died last season, leaving his billion-dollar business to Chuck. When Bart died, Chuck went into a frenzy and took off, leaving New York. Frantic to find him, Chuck’s on-again off-again total soulmate and current girlfriend Blair Waldorf found solace in Chuck’s uncle, Jack.

Chuck Bass, Blair Waldorf, Jack Bass

OK – let’s wrap this incredibly detailed storyline up. Jack finds Chuck and brings his sorry ass back to New York. Chuck has some ups and downs but finally brings it together in order to agree to take over his father’s company. Jack, being pissed that HE won’t run it, tries to ruin Chuck and fails.

Jack tries to rape approaches Chuck’s step-mother (Bart’s widow) Lilly at an event and Chuck saves her steps in to settle the issue. Chuck and Lilly then work together to send Jack to run business in Australia where he wouldn’t hurt them need a warm winter coat anymore.

Well, that all happened in the middle to end of season 2. This is now the middle to end of season 3 and UNCLE JACK IS BACK!

I was so excited to see this lovely, gorgeous, and exciting man back on the show. Sure, Chuck is a definite fan favorite. His reputation as a teen-turned-adult, his witty comments and overall appeal make him a definite choice for anyone to love. (And the actor who plays Chuck, Ed Westwick, is definitely deserving of an Emmy nom.)

Jack is…well…like Chuck, only more adult and still as evil lovely.

*SPOILER ALERT*

Chuck now runs his own hotel, and in last night’s episode he finds out that some of his female staff are (falsely) accusing him of sexual harrassment. Ding Ding! Jack arrives just in time for Chuck to blame him for the entire affair. This is able for Jack to continue to be on the show until, once again, he is shipped off to some remote location and I am left in my “I HEART JACK BASS” T-shirt waiting upon his return.

To get to know Jack, here are some sample quotes of his from last night: (WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!)

(To Blair, whom Jack has slept with): “I’ve already had everything of Chuck’s worth having. *kisses her hand and goes to leave* And as always, the pleasure was yours.”

(To Chuck): I get why you’d fall for all of this, what with your mommy issues; or was that normal attachments to your babysitters? Didn’t help that I was nailing them, huh?”

(To Chuck, re: protestors outside his hotel over Chuck’s lawsuit): “I never realized how many sex puns you can make out of ‘Chuck Bass.'”

(To Lilly, re: an apology over raping approaching her): “I was drinking. Taking some over-the-counter pills they started keeping behind the counter. And some meth.”

So sure, while I am probably the only person who watches the show that actually likes Jack (besides my sister), you have to admit he is a colorful character. He is a favorite of mine, and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

Watch Gossip Girl Monday nights at 9 p.m. on the CW.

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood!

March 22, 2010

Hello, neighbor!

This adorable show about a friendly neighbor used to entertain me to no end when I was little. (Now, unfortunately, this show would probably be seen as some kind of propaganda for pedophiles. Sad how the world changes.)

At any rate, the late Mister Rogers is still in the minds and hearts of all those he touched with his warm welcomes and stupendous wisdom. After all, who could forget his series on imaginary friends? Or his 5-part series on Things to Wear? (And where was HIS Pulitzer Prize? Huh?)

Fred Rogers (aka Mister Rogers) did, however, win 4 Daytime Emmy awards and was nominated for a bucketload more. (Fun Fact: Did you know that the show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood ran from 1968-2001? It had 31 seasons and over 400 episodes? Well, if you didn’t, you do now.)

The reason I bring up the late, great Mister R. is because word broke today that some close friends of this great man want to honor him on his birthday (March 20) by having a nation-wide volunteer day.

Now, friends and colleagues of late television icon Fred Rogers want to honor his legacy with a national day of volunteering on his birthday. Rogers, who died in 2003 after battling stomach cancer, would have been 82 on Saturday.

David Newell, who played Mr. McFeely on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, said volunteering meant a lot to Rogers.

This sounds like a solid idea, and a great way that honored this man who was on our sets for over 30 years. I will always remember Mister Rogers, and I thank him for teaching me how to correctly take off my coat, put a new one on, then take off my shoes and put new ones on. (While flipping the second one in the air. That’s key.)

RIP Mister Rogers.

I Can Dig It!

March 21, 2010

Is anyone else’s bracket but mine completely screwed???  Yeah…thanks Kansas/Notre Dame/Villanova/Vanderbilt! Good thing I didn’t pick either of you for my final four…

Anyway..moving along… here is what I’m picking to watch this week. (PS – if you are really interested in reading action about the NCAA games online [as well as a few jokes and original videos] check out my dad’s blog here: http://blogs.rep-am.com/Time_Out/ . Anything by LEE LEWIS is his, and the videos? All shot by me. Your welcome!}

Ahem…

1. Dancing with the Stars   Monday  8 p.m.  on ABC

Can you believe Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) has been on for 10 seasons!? Yeah..me either. But it has, and the season 10 premiere airs tomorrow (Monday) night at 8 p.m. The cast list for this season has its share of…well…it should be a good show.

I started getting into this show a few seasons ago. Is it wrong to say I like the pro dances better than the star/pro dances? While some people like to see the “star” – let’s face it, you don’t see George Clooney up there wearing sequins and doing a paso doble – mess up, or see who is doing well or improving; my favorite is the results show when a musical guest will perform and two (or more) real professional dancers..well..dance.

Below are two of my favorite professional dances – but you should still watch the show anyway to see the stars!! (Rumor is, Pamela Anderson will be on it. I know. Who knew she was still around, huh?)

2. Castle  Monday 10 p.m.  on ABC

*NOTE: This is my grandmother’s favorite “guilty pleasure” show, and I enjoy it too, but this one is definitely for my Gramz.

I believe this show doesn’t get enough credit for what it is. Is it a cop show? Yes. Does it revolve around a man and a woman with sexual tension who will play the “will-they won’t-they” game until the series finale when they finally confess that they’ve loved each other for 10 years (see: JAG)? Yes.

Is this a typical show? …Not really.

See, yes there is a man and a woman (Richard Castle and Kate Beckett, see left) but instead of two partners – two cops or two lawyers or cop and lawyer or cop and doctor – this show deals with cop Beckett and writer Castle. Yes, Castle writes mystery novels, and he follows Beckett around as inspiration for his new set of novels, featuring heroine Nikki Heat (who is based off of Beckett).

Yes, the two obviously love each other. That whole, Her: You’re annoying.  Him: I will do anything to save/protect you., bit gets old and no matter how hard you try to hide it, if there is the slightest bit of that present in a show, you know that the two characters belong together and hopefully will before the show gets cancelled and gets no resolution.

This week’s episode introduces Desperate Housewives star Dana Delaney as an FBI Agent that is just like Beckett. (This also reunites Delaney and Nathan Fillion, who plays Castle. The two previously starred on Desperate Housewives together as husband and wife.) There is also a killer on the loose out to get Beckett and, as the promo below shows you, tries to get her by (possibly) blowing up her apartment. As a personal fan of a Beckett/Castle relationship, I am so loving how this will play out.

3. Gigi   Saturday  8 p.m.  on Turner Classic Movies

So, this one is definitely out of the ordinary for I Can Dig It!. But, since NCAA Basketball has taken over TV, I decided to go outside the box.

First of all, its an older movie that many people have already seen. Second of all, it’s on a station that not everybody gets. Turner Classic Movies? Ever heard of it? Am I the only one who watches it?

Pressing on. This movie, about a young “courtesan-in-training” and an older rich playboy enjoy a platonic relationship that may not be platonic for long. The playboy, Gaston, is fascinated by the young Gigi since she is not like other girls he has known. He falls for her and requests her hand in marriage, which causes some, of course, turmoil and romantic dramatics.

The nine-Academy Award winning film is a classic, and one that I enjoy very much. So, if you have the channel and have nothing to do Saturday night, I suggest tuning in. It’s quite a thrill.

Find one of my favorite scenes in the video below, and enjoy!

Irish Characters on YOUR TV

March 17, 2010

I am not Irish, and I haven’t celebrated St. Patrick’s Day since high school when we were told we’d get extra credit in a class for wearing green. (It didn’t normally happen…but I digress.) But I decided, in the spirit of it all I’d give a list of my top 3 favorite Irish characters on television. (With one that isn’t currently on TV to date.)

3. Peter Griffin

Show:  Family Guy

Role: Husband to Lois; Father of Meg, Chris and Stewie; Owner of dog Brian

Irish Relations: His father, Francis, who Peter discovers is really his adoptive father. Peter’s real dad, Mickey, lives in Ireland.

Reason Why He’s Great: I believe Peter Griffin is America’s favorite (adult) comedic father. He is raunchy, dirty, ridiculous, and does outwardly dumb things. Which is why his show is a success and he himself is a household name.

When Peter finds out his Irish father, Francis, was really his adoptive father, Peter goes on the search for his real dad. He finds his father in a bar in Ireland, and realizes that he really does have more in common with his dad than he did with Francis.

Check out the video below that father and son share together to celebrate their Irishness.

2. Angel

Show: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel

Role: A brooding vampire with a soul who starts a forbidden romance with vampire slayer Buffy Summers, then moves to Los Angeles (and has his own show) where he starts his own mystical detective agency

Irish Relations: Not know he’s Irish until episode at the end of Buffy season 2, when we see that he was actually a drunken fool named Liam in Ireland before he became a vampire. Also gives Buffy a Claddagh ring for her birthday.

Reason Why He’s Great: Angel comes onto the Buffy scene as a gorgeous, mysterious man who shows up to help Buffy at just the right time. He ends up forming a relationship with her (even though he’s immortal and 200+ years, while she is 16 and mortal) and in season 2, loses his soul when he experiences “true happiness” – i.e. sex with Buffy.

He becomes his former demon self and Buffy realizes she has to kill him in order to save the world. Then, as luck would have it, at the last minute he gets his soul back (thanks to Buffy’s wicca friend Willow who performs the spell needed to do so). Buffy still kills him – she must save the world after all! – but in the third season he comes back from hell, and lives on to start up again with Buffy before leaving her and heading to L.A. to start his own demon-fighting detective agency. Yeah, totally normal. (But insanely gorgeous and too fantastic of a..well..vampire.)

1. Fiona Glenanne

Show: Burn Notice

Role: On and off girlfriend of burned spy Michael Westen; ex-IRA agent

Irish Relations: Originally from Ireland, Fiona became a member of the IRA (Irish Republican Army); has one sister, Claire (deceased) and one brother Sean that we know of; was going to return to Ireland in season 3, but troubles with a Irish madmen prevent her from possibly ever going back; since moving to Miami has dropped the Irish accent she had in the first episode in order to fit in.

Reason Why She’s Great: Fiona is pretty much the ultimate femme fatale. Her interests include guns, C-4 and shoes. Oh, and Michael – her “ex” boyfriend who she still has (complicated) relations with.

In one episode in season 3, we find out that Fiona had a sister, Claire, who was killed when she was young. Due to this, Fiona dedicated her life to revenge and joined the IRA. In this episode – entitled “Long Way Back” – her brother, Sean, comes to Miami to warn his sister that the man who killed Claire is on the hunt for Fiona. Fiona ends up getting kidnapped by this man, named Thomas O’Neill, but gets rescued by Michael and Sam Axe – but not before she gets shot in the arm and Sean suffers a gunshot wound himself. It gives some insight into Fiona’s Irish background.

South Park Returns to Target Tiger

March 17, 2010

Eric Cartman and Tiger Woods

If you’ve been following the Tiger Woods’ scandal… which I have, religiously…then you know of his public apology that aired a few weeks ago. (If you don’t, he had to apology because he was..ahem…unfaithful to his wife with numerous women.)

Well…it was only a matter of time before the masterminds behind South Park got a hold of this.

Tonight marks the premiere of the show’s 14th season, and the target behind the premiere episode is Tiger Woods. The title of the episode is “Sexual Healing”…pretty sure this won’t be about The Masters.

Tonight’s episode has the boys of South Park falling victim to sex addiction. While men in the town suddenly start desiring several women, a group of scientists come in to stop the phenom. They run a series of tests, and it seems that the boys at South Park Elementary are diagnosed with sex addiction.

To read more about the episode and see some sneak peeks, click here and make sure to watch tonight at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central.

I Can Dig It!

March 14, 2010

Is Daylight Savings Time screwing anyone else up?  The only reason I know to spring my clocks ahead or to turn them back is because someone (usually a family member or news anchor) tells me to. I still don’t know why…but I guess it doesn’t matter. All I know is that TV will still air as regularly scheduled – whether 8 p.m. today was 7 p.m. yesterday or not. So let’s get started on what to watch this week!

1. NCAA Tournament (“Big Dance”)  All day Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday  on CBS

The NCAA Tournament is THE tournament for college basketball. (Think, Super Bowl for college basketball. Think Olympics for college basketball.)

It’s always a thrill to see how 64 teams can be cut down to the “Sweet 16” (16 teams) in just four days. The best part is seeing teams from smaller schools that are thrilled to be there. It’s just like seeing a country in the Olympics that has only one or two participants. Sure, they’d like to win, but they’re just happy to be there.

For instance, everyone knows that UConn (whoo!) usually makes it, or that Kansas and Kentucky will dominate the men, but it’s the little teams that no one’s really heard of that make up a great Cinderella story.

Today is Selection Sunday, which is when the participating teams and where/who they will play is announced. Brackets are formed (for the men’s games), and gambling addicts everywhere spend days going over rankings and point totals.

(Oh yeah, and women also play in this tournament too.)

The two top picks for men are Kentucky and Kansas. The top pick for women is the UConn team.

Below is a video created for Kentucky player John Wall, who is famous for the “John Wall Dance” he created. You’ll get the jist of it. (And yes, the “Network TV Wall” and “Cougar Wall” are from Don’t Touch That Dial favorite show Cougar Town. The man doing it, Josh Hopkins, is from Kentucky.)

2. Gossip Girl  Mondays at 9 p.m. on the CW Network

Last week marked the first new episode of Gossip Girl since Thanksgiving. It was a thrill for fans everywhere – and even more of a thrill knowing that the rest of the season will air (no hiatus in between) until the end of the season (slated for May 17).

This show of priviledged teenagers goes WAY beyond your usual after school special. The show has sex, it has drugs, it has betrayals, romances, weddings, adoptive kids, and just about everything that anyone could ever go through ever.

And these kids are only 19.

This show is great for teenagers and up (not really suitable for the under 13 category). It has a combination of teenage angst and drama (which is more than just.. “OMG she totally wore the same dress as me!) as well as a parents drama (Serena and Dan, two of the teen stars, were dating in season 1, now in season 3 they are brother and sister as her mom and his dad got hitched.)

To see a promo of Monday night’s episode, check out the vid below:

3.  Scrubs  Wednesday at 8 p.m. on ABC

Scrubs – a medical comedy based around a quirky doctor, his overbearing and downright mean mentor, and a whole other batch of riff raffed characters – is the show that I would pick to win Best Who Knew This Was Still On The Air? award.

On for nine seasons, this show has had its share of false cancellations. (Actually, the show originated on NBC which threw it away during its 7th season. ABC generously picked it up for an eighth and ninth season.)

The ninth season, however, lost most of the show’s original cast (keeping only Dr. Perry Cox [see: angry mentor above] and Dr. Christopher Turk, with appearances by few other original characters.) The show took a whole new dynamic – switching from the hospital set it was used to and putting the show’s focus on (yes, the hospital) but also the med school where Dr. Cox and Turk are teachers. The new med students make up the new cast, as well as former intern, now doctor, Denise Mahoney.

This week’s episode may be, finally, the series finale. The whole show may end on Wednesday, so even if you’ve never seen it, spend 30 mins and watch. (Or watch the endless re-runs aired on Comedy Central.)

SNEAK PEEKS OF THIS WEEKS SCRUBS.

Maury Povich for President!

March 12, 2010

Recently, I attended a taping of one of the best daytime shows on television: the Maury show.

For anyone unfamiliar with this excellent program, the Maury show focuses on couples that are dealing with infidelity and unsure paternity cases as well as unruly teens and insane phobias. It is daytime talk show television at its best!

When I went to the show (which tapes in Stamford, C.T.), I was so excited to be sitting in the audience and looking at a very familiar stage (see picture below).

I have watched Maury so many times and just loved that I was actually there in person. When they introduced Maury and he came out, everyone was clapping and screaming (including me). For a guy that’s usually made fun of for what he does, he has a great personality. He was cracking jokes and smiling the whole time.

SEE ERIC CARTMAN FROM SOUTH PARK ON MAURY.

The show we went to will air in 2 weeks (March 25) and I won’t lie, I’m excited to see it. (Mainly to see if/how many times I am on TV since my friends and I sat in the third row.)

While there, we saw lie detector and paternity tests (if you’re familiar with the show, you know what this entails) and I got to hear (live) the famous Maury catch phrase… “You ARE the father!”

I would very much like to go back to another taping of Maury, and I would LOVE to see an “Out of Control Teens” episode, which are my favorite. Especially D-West, a huge guy they bring out to yell at and intimidate the out of control teens while consoling the crying mothers and then whisking the teens (usually girls) off to a night in jail so they know what it’s like.

Check out D-West in action below, and understand why I love him. And watch the clip after it to see why I think Maury should get an Emmy.
