May 4, 2010

J.J. Abrams, exectuive producer of Lost and Alias, has a new pilot coming to NBC!

The show features two married ex-CIA agents who get pulled back into the business. The show stars Boris Kodjoe (Soul Food) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Doctor Who) as Steven and Samantha Bloom.

The official pilot synopsis is below, via Entertainment Weekly.

“Outwardly, Steven Bloom (Kodjoe) and his wife, Samantha (Mbatha-Raw), are a typical married couple who own a small catering company in Los Angeles and are helped by Samantha’s easily frazzled younger sister, Lizzy (Jessica Parker Kennedy). Secretly, the duo were two of the CIA’s best spies until they fell in love on the job five years ago and retired. When fellow spy and friend Nash (Carter MacIntyre) goes missing while on the trail of a Russian arms dealer, the Blooms are reinstated by boss Carlton Shaw (Gerald McRaney) to locate and rescue Nash. The pair is thrust back into the world of espionage as they follow leads that span the globe — and Steven and Samantha realize that this supercharged, undercover lifestyle provides the excitement and romance that their marriage has been missing.”

I Can Dig It!

May 2, 2010

1. Family Guy  Sunday 9 p.m.  on FOX

It is Family Guy’s 150th episode!!

I know, with all the repeats that air what seems like all day every day, it’s strange to think they’ve only reached 150 episodes. But! They’ve finally done it.

And how are the masterminds behind one of the funniest animated comedies of all time celebrating?

By having baby Stewie and dog Brian stuck in a bank vault and reviewing all of the shows classic musical numbers! And there have been lots. The episode will even showcase some never-before-seen musical moments.

For any fan of Family Guy, this will surely be a great episode, and bonus? It’s an hour long!

There have been many beloved musical acts in the show, but below I have added my personal favorite from an episode when Brian and Stewie traveled through different universes and then eneded up in a Disney-esque universe. Enjoy.

2. The Real Housewives of New Jersey  Monday 10 p.m. on Bravo

There are seemingly countless Real Housewives shows on now, but the New Jersey ones have to be a favorite of mine ever since a friend introduced them to me.

The second season premiere is this Monday at 10 p.m., and it looks to be a great season of drama and uh, distress. The ladies (from left) are Jacqueline, Dina, Danielle, Caroline and Teresa. Dina and Caroline are sisters, and Jacqueline is their sister-in-law. Teresa is a close friend of their’s and it seems that everyone hates Danielle.

It’s a fun show full of the glitz and glam of the rich (they go to ITALY this year?!) as well as the drama that goes on when five rich women spend too much time together.

3. American Idol  Tuesday 8 p.m. on FOX

I will be the first to admit that I don’t really watch American Idol. However, it seems that every female in my family watches it as does about 20 million other people weekly.

I will advertise it though for this week since the mentor and the song genre are personal favorites of mine.

The mentor is Harry Connick Jr. and the song genre? The songs of Frank Sinatra.

As a big fan of Frank’s music and also the dreamboat that is Harry Connick Jr., I will actually tune in this week. Check video below for one personal favorite Frank song that I hope they sing, and watch it Tuesday at 8 p.m.!

The Smoking Men of Rescue Me

May 1, 2010

Recently, a friend and mine have been watching the FX original series Rescue Me all the way through, from season one up through season five (season six beings in June). We love it so much that it has become ALL we can talk about.

Since my recent obbsession began, I have wanted to do a post that honors the gorgeous men of this show. Rescue Me revolves around a team of firefighters in NYC and their various personal and professional problems. Below, meet the gorgeous men that make up the show. (Note: These are not the only characters on the show. Others include Kenny “Lou” Shea, Jerry Reilly, “Needles” Nelson, etc.)

*POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERTS*

Tommy Gavin

Portrayed by show creator Denis Leary, Tommy Gavin is the star of the show and seems to have the most issues to overcome. To name a few? He’s an alcoholic, his wife and he separated, she took the kids and ran away without telling him, he started sleeping with his dead cousin’s (who died in 9/11) widow, his only son was killed by a drunk driver, his wife started sleeping with his brother (see below), who was then killed, and his wife also had a baby and they don’t know if the father is Tommy or his brother since they were both sleeping with said wife at the time. Yeah, its crazy. But! He somehow works his way to keep his head up the whole time, and looks good doing it.

Franco Rivera

Franco Rivera, as portrayed by Daniel Sunjata, is the ultimate player on a team of players. In the first season, he discovers he has a daughter, Keela, that he didn’t know about. When Keela’s mother dies, Franco begrudgingly takes her in, but learns to take care of her like a good father. In the third season, a wealthy girlfriend of Franco’s (Susan Sarandon) finds out that Franco has custody of Keela even though he signed away his parental rights, so she takes Keela and decides to raise her as her own. Franco really is a man’s man, and always takes care of business.

Sean Garrity

Sean Garrity (Steven Pasquale) is classified as the dumb guy on the team. He is always the first to say something stupid, get confused, or get his facts messed up. Sean really is the dumb guy with a heart of gold, but he’s adorable while doing it. He begins a relationship with Tommy’s messed up sister Maggie (Tatum O’Neal), and Sean and Maggie marry (just to divorce later). His close friendship with Mike (see below) makes the two a great “Dumb and Dumber” type pairing. In season 5, Sean finds out that he has kidney cancer (probably 9/11 related) but gets treatment for it and turns out OK.

Mike Silletti

Mike Silletti (Michael Lombardi) comes onto the team as the rookie – the “probie.” He is a new fireman who has to work to earn the respect of others. Similar to a frat house, the guys make Mike do all the grunt work – clean the house, clean the truck, do errands, etc. When its time for Mike to be made a full-on firefighter, he feels he is unappreciated in the house and wants to transfer out. However, rumors fly that he is gay (which, despite a few experiences he claims he’s not) and in a profession that is “old school” in its way of thinking, this doesn’t sit well with the guys on the other truck he wants to transfer to. Mike ends up staying where he is, and when they get a new probie, he finally makes his mark with the other guys.

SPECIAL MENTIONS

Johnny Gavin

Be still my beating heart! Johnny Gavin (Dean Winters) is by far my favorite Rescue Me character. Younger brother to Tommy, Johnny is a cop with the NYPD who helps Tommy get out of trouble when he needs it. Johnny has an ex-wife Angie (Marisa Tomei) and two daughters that are never seen. After Tommy and his wife, Janet,’s son Conner is killed by a drunk driver, Johnny hooks up with Janet. Tommy is furious when he finds out, beating Johnny up and down the street. Tommy tries to get Johnny pissed by dating Angie, but Johnny doesn’t buy it. Johnny says he’s loved Janet since she and Tommy met in high school, and it’s assumed that he picked Angie as second best when Janet married Tommy. Janet gets pregnant and doesn’t tell Johnny she has also secretly been with Tommy, so Johnny believes it’s his. At a stakeout one night, Johnny is shot to death. He is definitely my favorite character – being so tough yet so sweet – and I love him for it. (Check out clip of him below.)

Mickey Gavin

Mickey Gavin (Robert John Burke) is Tommy’s cousin. He was a priest, but then left the church for reasons unknown (he does have a girlfriend, so that may be a reason). Mickey brings Tommy to AA meetings and acts as Tommy’s sponsor. He tries to keep Tommy in line, making sure his drinking and everything is settled correctly. Mickey seems to be one of the more moral Gavin family members, always trying to get everyone’s drinking (everyone in the family pretty much has a problem with alcohol) under control. (Side note: Robert John Burke who plays Mickey is probably best known, for me anyway, as playing Bart Bass on Gossip Girl.)

So there you have it. Those are the men of Rescue Me that deserve to be in GQ Magazines everywhere. (Side note 2: Desmond Harrington, famous on Don’t Touch That Dial for portraying Jack Bass on Gossip Girl, Bart’s brother, has a guest spot on Rescue Me where he plays Troy, a firefighter that admires Tommy to an almost creepy extent.)

Check out these clips below. WARNING: Contains mature content.

“I’m a funny lesbian. I’m Ellen!”

April 30, 2010

On this date 13 years ago, Ellen DeGeneres made TV history.

How? Well, it was on this date that her character, Ellen Morgan, on her sitcom Ellen came out as a lesbian. She was the first gay lead character on television. The episode was entitled “The Puppy Episode,” and was one of the highest rated of the show.

Since then, television shows about gays and lesbians have popped up all over. Such shows include, but aren’t limited to, Will and Grace, Queer as Folk, and The L Word.

Ellen now has her own very successful daytime talk show which has won the actress/comedian Daytime Emmys. She also currently resides as the fourth judge on American Idol.

You can watch the end of “The Puppy Episode” below, and watch the Ellen talk show every day on NBC.

Joey Potter to be Jackie Kennedy!

April 28, 2010

It’s official. Katie Holmes – aka Joey Potter, aka Mrs. Tom Cruise – has been cast to play Jacqueline Kennedy in an upcoming History Channel mini-series.

The eight-hour long mini-series entitled The Kennedys is slotted to premiere next year. Holmes will portray the late Mrs. Kennedy, with Greg Kinnear (The Last Song) playing John F. Kennedy (JFK), Barry Pepper (61*) playing Robert Kennedy and Tom Wilkinson (John Adams) playing Joe Kennedy, Sr.

Jackie Kennedy has been getting a lot of attention recently. Along with Holmes portraying her in the upcoming mini-series, there will also be a biopic about Mrs. Kennedy where she will be portrayed by (British-born) Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener).

To see a clip of Holmes acting, check out the scene below from her hit show Dawson’s Creek. (Holmes, in case you don’t know, is the one in the yellow sweater.) And keep an eye out for the upcoming mini-series!

Only “The Deadliest Catch” Crabs

April 27, 2010

The Deadliest Catch is not only a fascinating show about fishing boats during crab season – its the number two highest rated cable show.

The show is a docu-series (documentary series…which I may have just made up) about fishermen in the Bering Sea during Alaskan king crab fishing season. I know, it sounds lame, but a good source (my dad) says it is actually fascinating. There are big storms that knock these ships – and the people aboard – around. It focuses on the dangers of this job, and how scary it can really be on the rough seas.

The show recently got public notice this past January when its captain, Phil Harris, died of a massive stroke. According to the article, Harris started working on fishing boats when he was 7-years-old, and began working on crab boats when he was 17. By the time he was 21, Harris was running a fishing vessel out of Seattle, making him one of the youngest captains in the Bering Sea.

Currently in its sixth season, The Deadliest Catch airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on The Discovery Channel.

I Can Dig It!

April 25, 2010

Back on schedule!!  Let’s get to it!

1. The 8th Annual TV Land Awards  Sunday  9 p.m. on TV Land

I know what this looks like, but this is real.

The TV Land Awards have been just a fun, silly show that always seem to have an entertaining opening.

The thing that makes this year so special is the lineup they have.

The awards tonight will honor Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and the cast of Glee; the cast of Everybody Loves Raymond will also be reunited; and the late Farrah Fawcett will be honored by her Charlie’s Angels co-stars Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd.

It should be an interesting night, full of laughs and tears – and as a fan of everyone previously mentioned, I am sure looking forward to it.

2. NCIS  Tuesday 8 p.m. on CBS

NCIS is actually a very good show.

I say it like this because I was a huge fan up until the end of season 2 when my favorite agent, Kate Todd, *SPOILER* was killed. Since then, I have only watched here and there – and any repeats that have Kate in it. (The show is currently in its seventh season.)

Since then, the show has hired a new female agent (Ziva David) whom everyone has grown to like – except me, whose still angry about Kate’s demise.

This week’s epiosde marks a first for the show – the first time that boss, Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs takes a polygraph test. Gibbs is a hard-ass, no-nonsense guy and it’s better to be with him than against him. He makes a great character, however, and it should be interesting to see how it plays out.

3. The Mentalist  Thursday 10 p.m on CBS

This is an interesting show about “a bogus TV psychic who got his family murdered by the serial killer he pretended to profile.” He now uses his ability to read people to help catch criminals through the California Bureau of Investigation.

This week’s episode revolves around a “Self Realization Center” – a cult, really – and how the leader of it (played by A Clockwork Orange’s Malcolm McDowell) gets under Patrick Jane (Simon Baker)’s skin.

It all relates back to his family’s murder, and it should be very interesting how it is all played out.

For Rick Hancock…

April 21, 2010

**This was written at the request of my wonderful teacher Rick Hancock.

24 is a show that premiered in 2001 and will be ending in May 2010.

This show has run for eight seasons and almost 200 episodes. At the time it goes off the air, it will be the longest running espionage-based television drama ever.

24 centers on Special Agent Jack Bauer who works for the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) in Los Angeles. Through out the series, Bauer must prevent multiple terrorist attack plots, including Presidential assassination attempts, nuclear, biological and chemical threats, as well as cyber threats.

I think the most fascinating thing about this show is the fact that it is presented in “real time,” meaning that every minute of airtime corresponds with every minute of these fictituious characters’ lives. Each episode of the season represents one hour in a day.

Changes to the main cast are made every season, so it’s near impossible to list just a few main stars. Keifer Sutherland (Bauer) is in fact the only character to ever appear in every episode.

The show, while a crowd favorite, is very tricky to get into. It’s not the kind of show you can just pick up with in its fourth or fifth season. This is definitely one that you have to watch from the beginning.

Either way, this Golden Globe award winning show has proven to be a favorite among dramatic television, and one of Rick Hancock’s favorite shows. So enjoy these last few weeks, Rick! Then you’ll have to find something else. (Luckily, he has this blog to look at for references to other shows.)

I Can Dig It! *SPECIAL EDITION*

April 18, 2010

For part of my project for this class, we have to create a site about a certain aspect of our blog. I decided to rotate my site around how crime dramas affect real life. To enhance this, I have created a video (for the site) of top 5 crime dramas on TV now that everyone should be watching.

So, since this week is super (non-TV related) busy for me, I have decided to do the I Can Dig It! section this week by just showing my video.
