Hello, neighbor!
This adorable show about a friendly neighbor used to entertain me to no end when I was little. (Now, unfortunately, this show would probably be seen as some kind of propaganda for pedophiles. Sad how the world changes.)
At any rate, the late Mister Rogers is still in the minds and hearts of all those he touched with his warm welcomes and stupendous wisdom. After all, who could forget his series on imaginary friends? Or his 5-part series on Things to Wear? (And where was HIS Pulitzer Prize? Huh?)
Fred Rogers (aka Mister Rogers) did, however, win 4 Daytime Emmy awards and was nominated for a bucketload more. (Fun Fact: Did you know that the show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood ran from 1968-2001? It had 31 seasons and over 400 episodes? Well, if you didn’t, you do now.)
The reason I bring up the late, great Mister R. is because word broke today that some close friends of this great man want to honor him on his birthday (March 20) by having a nation-wide volunteer day.
Now, friends and colleagues of late television icon Fred Rogers want to honor his legacy with a national day of volunteering on his birthday. Rogers, who died in 2003 after battling stomach cancer, would have been 82 on Saturday.
David Newell, who played Mr. McFeely on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, said volunteering meant a lot to Rogers.
This sounds like a solid idea, and a great way that honored this man who was on our sets for over 30 years. I will always remember Mister Rogers, and I thank him for teaching me how to correctly take off my coat, put a new one on, then take off my shoes and put new ones on. (While flipping the second one in the air. That’s key.)
RIP Mister Rogers.
